Reconstruction of an old necklace from Greenland. The original exhibit is located in the NORDISKA MUSEET in Stockholm. NUILARMIUT (name of jewelry) has changed from a small jewelry on the neck to a wide collar, which can weigh up to 1.5 kg.
For the first time the girl wore such jewelry on the first day of school. The patterns on the jewelry were different for all families. NUILARMIUT is used as part of a Greenlandic holiday costume. Glass beads have been available in Greenland since the 18th century through imports, but wide collars began to be made in the early 20th century. Previously, beads were used for jewelry made of bones, animal teeth and stones.
The traditional dress was made of multicolored cotton fabric. The shoulder girdle was decorated with beads. When the weather in Greenland was the coldest, people dressed in warm fur clothes.
